Barcelona star Abidal returns to training after liver transplant

French defender Eric Abidal moved to Barcelona from Lyon in 2007.
Barcelona defender Eric Abidal returned to training Wednesday after seven months on the sidelines following a liver transplant.

The 33-year-old was delighted to be back in action as he told the official website of the Catalan giants.

"I've been thinking about training will the ball for a long time," the 33-year-old said. "Today is the first day. I'm tired, but happy. I think from now on my path to recovery will go well."

The world of football was stunned when Abidal was diagnosed with a liver tumor in May 2011, but he made a remarkable recovery to reclaim his place in the first team squad at the Camp Nou.

But further complications arose in March which necessitated the transplant operation and another lengthy spell of rehabilitation.

Abidal, hugely popular with the Barca fans, began his career with Monaco before moving to Lille in 2002. It was after leaving Lille to join Lyon in 2004 that he rose to prominence.

Following three French First Division triumphs Abidal moved to Barcelona in June 2007.

Since moving to Spain, Abidal has collected a host of honors.

He was a part of the Barca squad which won three consecutive La Liga titles between 2009 and 2011.

Abidal has collected a Cop del Rey winner's medal on two occasions and helped Barca clinch European Champions League glory in 2009 and 2011.

In addition to his achievements at club level, Abidal has collected 61 caps for France.

He was part of the Les Bleus squad which finished as runners-up at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

NFL commissioner upholds Saints 'bounty' suspensions

The Saints' Jonathan Vilma will sit out the season after all, according to an NFL decision Tuesday.
Football Commissioner Roger Goodell upheld suspensions for four current and former New Orleans Saints players accused of taking part in a three-year "bounty" program, but he reduced the terms for two former team members, the NFL announced Tuesday.

Former Saints defensive lineman Scott Fujita's three-game suspension was cut to one game, while the eight-game penalty given to Anthony Hargrove was cut to seven. But the two who remain with the Saints -- Will Smith and Jonathan Vilma -- saw no change to their suspensions, the league announced.

NFL officials have concluded all four helped lead a program that offered bonuses to Saints players who inflicted injuries on opponents over a three-year period. Goodell found the program "represented conduct detrimental to the league and professional football."

"Our investigation disclosed nearly two dozen players who either contributed to, or received money from, the pool operated by the Saints' defense. The four disciplined players either were involved in specific bounties on an opposing player, contributed substantially to the bounty program, engaged in payments that violated League rules or were untruthful when the program was initially investigated," Goodell said.

The NFL already has penalized the Saints and members of its coaching staff of the program, which operated from 2009-2011. The NFL Players Association, the player's union, said it would "thoroughly" review Goodell's decision "and review all options to protect our players' rights with vigilance."

"For more than six months, the NFL has ignored the facts, abused the process outlined in our collective bargaining agreement and failed to produce evidence that the players intended to injure anyone, ever. The only evidence that exists is the League's gross violation of fair due process, transparency and impartiality during this process."

But in letters to the players, parts of which were released by the NFL, Goodell wrote that he believes all four deserved suspensions.

Vilma, a Saints defensive captain, drew the longest suspension of the four. He was ordered to sit out a full season and is currently on the Saints' injured reserve list. In a letter announcing his decision, Goodell said he's convinced Vilma pledged $10,000 to any teammate who could hurt then-Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre "to an extent that he would not be able to continue playing" in the 2009 National Conference playoffs.

"I recognize that you and some of your teammates have denied that you made such a pledge or claim not to recall your doing so, but I am persuaded, based on the entirety of the record before me, that you did so," Goodell wrote. "And I find that such a pledge or any similar incentive is conduct detrimental."

Goodell said Smith, who has been on the field for the Saints this season, acknowledged that he approved of the program but denied "that anyone intended to inflict injury on any opposing player."

"Even in the face of repeated appeals to 'crank up the John Deere tractor and cart the guy off,' you and others now claim that the objective was instead merely to 'knock the wind out' of your opponents, requiring them to leave the game for only a play or two," he wrote. "From the standpoint of player safety, fair competition and the integrity of the game, the issues with which I am concerned today, this kind of after-the-fact explanation is little more than wordplay that, in my judgment as Commissioner, offers no basis on which to excuse conduct that does not belong in professional football."

As for Fujita, now with the Cleveland Browns, Goodell said he had no evidence that the player had contributed to the bounty pool, but knew about it and didn't speak out against it.

"Your failure to act contributed to allowing this program to remain in place not only during the 2009 season, but for two additional seasons after that," Goodeel wrote.

Meanwhile, Hargrove is now a free agent and will be credited with the five regular-season games he has missed so far -- leaving him to sit out two games once he's signed to another team. Goodell wrote that Hargrove tried to mislead investigators and block the NFL probe into the Saints and made several statements that were "not credible" during a mid-September meeting.

Djokovic sets sights on reclaiming world number one ranking

Novak Djokovic is aiming to recapture his world number one ranking at the Shanghai Masters
Novak Djokovic has trained his sights on reclaiming the world number one ranking from 17-time grand slam winner Roger Federer by the end of 2012.

The Serbian relinquished top spot in July after the veteran Swiss beat Andy Murray in the Wimbledon final, recording his seventh triumph at the All England Club.

But Djokovic's victory in the China Open on Sunday helped him close the gap and he can reclaim the No. 1 slot if he wins this week's Shangahi Masters and Federer does not reach the last eight.

Though that is unlikely, there are plenty more ranking points to play for in the coming weeks with tournaments in Valencia, Basel and Paris to come before the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London.

"The No. 1 of the world is a goal for me until the end of the year, it is definitely an objective, something I will try to achieve," Djokovic was quoted as saying by the ATP Tour's official website.

"But it's not daily on my mind. I obviously try to focus on my day-to-day commitments that I have at the tournaments and every match that I play in. This [has been] my mindset always and was working well so far."

Djokovic clinched his third straight China Open title on Sunday, celebrating by joining a troupe of dancers to show off his "Gangnam" skills, and is aiming for a strong finish to a year that has tailed off somewhat.

After his Australian Open win in a marathon match with Rafael Nadal, the Spaniard gained revenge at the French Open, beating the Serbian in the final.

Djokovic was then knocked out of Wimbledon in the semifinal by Federer, beaten in the last four of the Olympics by Andy Murray and again bested by the Briton in the U.S. Open final in September.

It has led many to predict that Murray can mirror Djokovic's stellar 2011 and go on to add many more majors to his portfolio, and the 25-year-old thinks his longtime friend and rival is more than capable.

"I don't think it's good to predict anything because tennis is such a unique sport, individual sport," he said. "A lot of factors are involved.

"Obviously mentally it's a matter of staying strong, staying healthy physically, trying to perform your best on a regular basis.

"He won his first grand slam. He could have won it already a couple years ago. He's a quality player. He's [been] one of the best players in the world in the last five years, there's no question about it.

"He's been improving ever since he got to professional tennis. He definitely is a contender to win all the grand slams, there's no question about it."

Murray starts his defense of his Shanghai Masters title against Florian Mayer on Wednesday after the German beat Australia's Bernard Tomic 6-4 6-0 in the first round, while Djokovic faces Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria.

Elsewhere, there was a surprise defeat for No. 7 seed Juan Monaco of Argentina, as he was defeated 6-4 6-2 by Spain's Fernando Verdasco.

American John Isner, the No. 8 seed, won the a tight contest with fellow big-hitter Kevin Anderson of South Africa, winning 7-6 6-7 7-6.

Kei Nishikori, who became the first Japanese player to win the Japan Open last week, continued his good form beating China's Di Wu 6-2 6-2.

The No. 10 seed, Croatia's Marin Cilic beat Martin Klizan, of Slovenia, 7-5 6-1 while Canadian No. 12 seed Milos Raonic beat Marinko Matosevic of Australia 7-6 6-3.

Warrington Wolves player Paul Wood played on despite rupturing a testicle.
British rugby league player Paul Wood has lost a testicle after a collision during the English sport's showpiece final at Manchester's Old Trafford stadium on Saturday.

Wood was playing for the Warrington Wolves against Leeds Rhinos in the Super League Grand Final.

The prop sustained the injury one minute into the second half, but managed to play the rest of the match before seeking treatment.

Despite Wood's determined effort, Warrington lost the match 26-18 to 2011 champions Leeds.

"Ruptured my right testicle, got a knee one minute into the second half, had to have it removed," tweeted the 30-year-old father of two.

Showing his sense of humor remained intact, he later tweeted: "Just coming out the hospital to go home... Seriously feel like I've left something?

"Tony Smith (Warrington coach) did say in his pre-match team talk last night 'your balls are on the line here guys!' I didn't think he meant literally."

Rugby League is similar to Rugby Union, although each team has 13 players rather than 15.

Solemia dashes Japanese hopes in thrilling Arc finish

Solemia dashes Orfevre's hopes
Japanese raider Orfevre failed in his bid to become the first non-European trained winner of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe when he was denied by home-grown outsider Solemia at Longchamp Sunday.

After a huge last-to-first move, Orfevre was dramatically run down in the final strides by Solemia to give jockey Olivier Peslier his fourth win in the race, breaking thousands of Japanese hearts in the process.

Orfevre, already a Triple Crown winner in his home country, looked to be pulling clear of the field as they entered the home straight.

But four-year-old filly Solemia responded to her jockey to run down Orfevre, ridden by four-time champion jockey Christophe Soumillon, winning by a head.

Although not considered among the favorites heading in to the Longchamp showpiece, Solemia's victory maintains the successful recent record of fillies in this race.

Last year's winner, Danedream, was also a filly.

Thousands of Japanese fans and more than 100 accredited journalists from the country had descended on Paris to witness arguably their best chance at capturing the Arc since Deep Impact in 2006.

Racing-mad Japan has long had designs on Europe's most prestigious race, having sent their first runner to Longchamp in 1969.

Japanese Horse of the Year Orfevre was widely considered among the favorites for this year's edition, despite being drawn in the unfavorable stall 18 -- the widest possible berth.

Widely considered Europe's most prestigious all-age race, this year's running was notable for its high-profile absentees.

First Ed Dunlop's tough filly Snow Fairy, third in this race in 2011, was ruled out after suffering a slight injury in training.

Then defending champion Danedream was sensationally scratched after an outbreak of swamp fever at her training center in Germany.

Although Danedream herself is completely healthy, German veterinary authorities immediately slapped a travel ban on all horses entering or leaving the facility, meaning she was unable to make the trip to Paris.

With Frankel, rated the best horse in the world, also opting to sit this one out, it appeared to leave the field wide open for Orfevre, who had previously demonstrated form over the mile-and-a-half distance, as well as a devastating turn of foot.

Outside of the duel for first place, Masterstroke, ridden by French jockey Mikael Barzalona, finished third.

The Aiden O'Brien-trained Camelot, ridden by Godolphin jockey Frankie Dettori, never factored and finished down the field in seventh place.

Manchester United jump to second in EPL with convincing win at Newcastle

Manchester United players celebrate Tom Cleverley's superb goal in the 3-0 win at Newcastle.
Manchester United moved into second spot in the English Premier League with a convincing 3-0 win at Newcastle Sunday.

United have moved above local rivals Manchester City on goal difference, but both trail pacesetters Chelsea by four points after seven games.

Alex Ferguson's men responded to their shock 3-2 home defeat last weekend to Tottenham Hotspur with a fine performance against north-east hopefuls Newcastle.

Early goals from defenders Jonny Evans and Patrice Evra put them firmly in command before young England international Tom Cleverley wrapped up the three points with a brilliant strike after the break.

It was his first English Premier League goal.

Wayne Rooney, who set up the two opening goals from corners and was named man of the match, said United were delighted with their display.

"It was a great result, everyone knows this is one of the hardest games of the season and we came away and defended brilliantly," he told Sky Sports.

Tottenham, improving fast under new manager Andre Villas-Boas, built on their success at Old Trafford with a 2-0 home win over struggling Aston Villa.

Villas-Boas ended American goalkeeper Brad Freidel's run of 310 straight league games by selecting French international signing Hugo Lloris.

A mistake by Lloris nearly let in Villa for the opener in the second half but shortly afterwards Steven Caulker deflected home a Jermain Defoe shot.

Aaron Lennon sealed a win which lifts Tottenham to fifth, five points adrift of Chelsea, with a surging run and shot on 67 minutes.

Elsewhere, Liverpool's disappointing start to the season continued as they were held goalless at Anfield by Stoke, while Southampton and Fulham drew 2-2.

In Serie A, Juventus extended their unbeaten run to 47 games with a 2-1 away win at Siena.

The Turin side were boosted by the news Friday that their coach Antonio Conte could return to their bench in December and the victory kept them ahead of Napoli, later 2-1 winners at home to Udinese, on goal difference.

Andre Pirlo put them ahead after 14 minutes but Emanuele Calaio equalized after the break for the home side.

Midfielder Claudio Marchisio volleyed a superb winner in the 85th minute for Juve.

A third minute goal for Inter's Walter Samuel settled the Milan derby in the San Siro as they beat Milan 1-0.

Lazio also stayed in early title contention as Miroslav Klose scord twice in a 3-0 win over Pescara.

Reigning Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund lost more ground on runaway leaders Bayern Munich when they were held 1-1 at Hanover after Robert Lewandowski had given them a 26th minute lead.

Second placed Eintracht Frankfurt suffered their first defeat of the season, beaten 2-0 at Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Messi and Ronaldo ensure honors shared in 222nd El Clasico

Lionel Messi (left) and Cristiano Ronaldo celebrate goals in the El Clasico clash in the Camp Nou.
The 222nd El Clasico -- a match between Barcelona and Real Madrid which epitomizes the ultimate in team rivalry -- turned into an individual showcase for the two greatest players in world football and fittingly ended in a 2-2 draw Sunday.

Barcelona's Lionel Messi scored twice to put his side 2-1 ahead in their Camp Nou Stadium after an early strike from Real's Cristiano Ronaldo.

But the Portuguese star drew the reigning Spanish champions level on the hour mark with his second goal and almost certainly kept their title hopes alive.

They trail leaders Barcelona by eight points after seven games, 11 would have been almost insurmountable.

A draw was probably a fair result although it is unlikely the majority of the 98,000 fans who crammed into Barcelona's magnificent home stadium would have agreed.

Because at stake is not just the result of a football match but the very pride and honor of the Catalan people.

Independence calls
Many from this semi-autonomous region of Spain want full independence and last month more than a million people demanded just that in a demonstration in Barcelona.

Former Barca manager Pepe Guardiola publicly supported that ambition, which has gathered pace in the austerity-hit country, with many Catalonia citizens believing they are paying more than their fair share into the coffers of the government in Madrid.

This feeling of Catalan identity embodied in a football club is summed up by Barcelona's motto "mes que un club" -- more than a club, and clashes against Real Madrid are chances to give vent to their feelings.

The passionate atmosphere Sunday went up a notch as Barcelona officials allowed fans to display the yellow and red colors of Catalonia in a giant mosaic, holding up cards to get the effect.

And at exactly 17 minutes and 14 seconds, chants for independence rang out in reference to the Catalans' military defeat to the Royalists in the War of Spanish Succession in 1714.

Political football
Barcelona's central defender Gerard Pique had tweeted Saturday that he wanted politics to say out of El Clasico.

"The games between Barcelona and Madrid increasingly resemble Catalonia against Spain and this should not happen," he wrote.

"It's just a football match."

Whether all his fellow players agreed with Pique, they certainly missed him in defense as he was ruled out by injury.

The full throated chants had barely subsided when Ronaldo ran through a big gap in the Barcelona back line and shot past Victor Valdes on 22 minutes.

It was a record sixth goal in six matches against Barcelona and Real would be left to rue a miss by Karim Benzema soon afterwards which might have led to a different result.

His mishit shot hit the post and by halftime Messi had equalized after hesitation in the Real defense.

In the second half, Messi was fouled just outside the Real penalty area and got up to send an unstoppable free kick past Iker Casillas.

But Ronaldo replied when weakness at the heart of the home defense was again evident and he equalized with a low shot.

Both sides had chances to grab the three points but had to settle for a draw.

Controversial invite
The political undertones behind the latest El Clasico found further expression in the decision by Barcelona to invite Gilad Shalit, a former Israeli soldier who was held captive in Gaza for nearly five years.

It risked alienating their many supporters in the Palestine region and the Hamas government called for a boycott of the television coverage.

Barcelona responded by inviting a former Palestine international player Mahmoud Sarsak, who had been detained by the Israelis, but he declined to come.

Chelsea maintain storming start to EPL season as Man City keep pace

Chelsea's players celebrate Branislav Ivanovic's goal in their 4-1 victory over Norwich at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea continued to set the pace in the English Premier League with a comfortable 4-1 win over Norwich City at Stamford Bridge Saturday.

Norwich took an unlikely 11th minute lead through their star striker Grant Holt, but it was to prove short lived once the west London side got into their stride.

Goals from Fernando Torres, his 99th in English football, Frank Lampard and Eden Hazard put them 3-1 ahead by half time.

Branislav Ivanovic rounded off the scoring with an emphatic fourth in the 78th minute.

Both John Terry and Ashley Cole played and were given a warm reception by the home crowd.

Cole was forced to apologize Friday for a controversial Twitter comment as he reacted to the findings of an FA commission into the racial slur case brought against Terry.

The commission found Terry's evidence at the hearing "improbable, implausible and contrived" as they gave the reasons for his four-match ban and large fine for remarks aimed at QPR defender Anton Ferdinand in an EPL game last season.

He has until October 18 to appeal the decision or accept a ban which would rule him out of crucial games.

Manager Roberto Di Matteo confirmed after the game that Cole was likely to face action from the club over his tweet.

"We've got a social media policy at the club and there's going to be a disciplinary process against the tweet and that's how I'll leave it," Di Matteo said.

Chelsea have opened up a four-point lead over defendiing champions Manchester City, while Norwich are winless in the league this season.

Earlier Saturday, City accounted for Sunderland 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium, set on their way by a first half strike from Aleksandar Kolarov.

But with the visitors showing signs of getting back into the match, manager Roberto Mancini substituted Mario Balotelli, who looked disgruntled, with Sergio Aguero.

The hero of City's last-gasp title success did not take long to make his mark, connecting with a cross to make it 2-0.

James Milner added a late goal for City, who were held 1-1 in midweek in the Champions League by Borussia Dortmund and were winning for just the second time in seven games in all competitions.

In the late kickoff, Arsenal stepped up their challenge with a 3-1 win at West Ham.

Mohamed Diame gave West Ham the first half lead but French striker Olivier Giroud scored to level just before halftime for the Gunners.

Theo Walcott came on to put Arsenal ahead in the second half before Santi Cazorla completed the win late on to lift his side into fifth place.

Tight security in Shanghai as Federer appears after death threat

Roger Federer is flanked by security guard as he arrives for the ceremonial draw for the Shanghai Masters in China.
World No.1 Roger Federer arrived at the Shanghai Masters event in China Saturday amid tightened security after an online death threat against the Swiss superstar.

Federer was flanked by security guards as he made a public appearance to make the draw for the prestigious event with fellow tennis star Lleyton Hewitt.

He later visited an exhibition in the city where some of his Wimbledon memorabilia is on display.

A tournament spokesman told CNN: "We are fully aware of the comments that have been made and we take all such issues seriously.

"The Shanghai Rolex Masters has security in place for our players and every precaution is taken to make sure players are kept safe and comfortable and allowed to do the job they are here for; to play tennis and provide their fans with the thrill of watching them in action."

The chilling message on a Federer fan website under the name of 'Blue Cat Polytheistic Religion Founder O7 had read.

"On October 6, I plan to assassinate Federer for the purpose of tennis extermination."

The user also posted a doctored image of a decapitated Federer on his knees on a tennis court, next to a figure wielding an axe.

Federer, who is in Shanghai with his family, appeared unconcerned by threats as he performed his media duties.

"I am very happy to be back in Shanghai," he told the official ATP Tour website.

"I have a lot of fans here. I have not been here for two years because so many things in my life have changed, like having a family.

I decided five days ago that I was ready to play here and I discussed it with my wife (Mirka).

"I am very happy to be back here, where I have had a lot of success in the past."

He will face strong challenges from Novak Djokovic, who is bidding to win back the No.1 ranking, and defending champion Andy Murray when the action gets underway next week.

Els proud of foundation graduate Grace as he sets Dunhill pace

Branden Grace tees off during his round at Carnoustie in the Dunhill Links Championship
Ernie Els protege Branden Grace will take a four-shot lead into the final round of the Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews as he bids for a remarkable fourth European Tour win this season.

The 24-year-old South African is yet another graduate of the foundation run by this year's British Open champion Els and has enjoyed a purple patch in 2012.

He shot a three-under 69 at Carnoustie, the toughest of the three courses used in the tournament, to go to 20-under 196 after three rounds.

Els, who shot a 65 at St Andrews, is 12 shots adrift and believes Grace has the make of a major champion.

"He's good enough to win an Open -- he's that good," Els told the European Tour website.

"I remember winning the (2007) South African Open and he was top amateur," he added.

"He's always been a quality player and he's a world contender now."

Dane Thorbjorn Olesen is Grace's nearest challenger on 16-under, with Swedes Fredrik Andersson Hed and Alex Noren in third spot on 15-under.

Ryder Cup stars Martin Kaymer and Peter Hanson just made the cut on six and five under respectively but home hero Paul Lawrie missed out.

American Dustin Johnson, who won all three of his matches at Medinah, was on the same mark as Kaymer.

Franck Ribery scored both goals as Bayern Munich made it seven straight Bundesliga wins with a 2-0 defeat of Hoffenheim Saturday.
Franck Ribery scored both goals as Bayern Munich made it seven straight Bundesliga wins with a 2-0 defeat of Hoffenheim Saturday.

The Bavarian giants suffered a Champions League setback in midweek when they lost 3-1 to BATE Borisov in Belarus, but responded in style at their Allianz Arena.

Second-placed Eintracht Frankfurt play at Borussia Moenchengladbach Sunday, with the win leaving Bayern five points clear at the top.

French international star Ribery was on target after 19 minutes as he made full use of a fine pass from Thomas Mueller.

Visitors Hoffenheim battled hard, but goalkeeper Koen Casteels was beaten for a second time just after the break as Ribery fired home after good work from Mario Mandzukic and Toni Kroos.

"The team played very smart, we were very clever," Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes told AFP.

"Ribery was outstanding, not only because of the two goals, but because he has also back-tracked and won balls for us in defense.

With defending champions Borussia Dortmund not in action until Sunday, Schalke took advantage to move into outright third with a 3-0 win over Wolfsburg.

Former Schalke coach Felix Magath is now in charge of the Wolves, but his return to Gelsenkirchen's Veltins Arena was spoiled by home goals from Jefferson Farfan, Ibrahim Afellay and midfielder Roman Neustaedter.

Their third straight loss left Magath's men second from bottom.

In other action, Hamburg continued their improvement with a 1-0 win at Bavarian side Greuther Fuerth -- Son Heung-Min's first-half goal giving them three points to move up the eighth.

Mainz and Freiburg also enjoyed home wins over Nuremburg and Fortuna Dusseldorf respectively.

Friday night's action saw Werder Bremen slump to a 3-1 defeat at Augsburg.

Vettel leads Red Bull sweep of front row at Japanese Grand Prix

Sebastian Vettel is on pole position for the fourth straight year at Suzuka
Two time defending world champion Sebastian Vettel claimed pole in the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka for the fourth straight year Saturday ahead of Red Bull teammate Mark Webber.

The German clocked the fastest time of one minute 30.839 seconds, which was 0.251 seconds faster than Webber.

McLaren's Jenson Button was third quickest, but will start from eighth after having a five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change.

It has promoted home hope Kamui Kobayashi to third as the home driver produced a superb last qualifying lap in his Sauber to delight the crowd.

France's Romain Grosjean for Lotus will go from fourth with the second Sauber of Mexican Sergio Perez in fifth.

Button's relegation has moved Ferrari's championship leader Fernando Alonso up to sixth as he bids to protect his 29-point title lead over Vettel.

Lewis Hamilton, who announced his move to Mercedes this week, was a disappointing ninth fastest in the second McLaren in a further blow to his receding championship challenge.

Seven-time champion Michael Schumacher, who is being replaced at Mercedes by Hamilton and will retire for the second time at the end of the season, was unable to make the top-10 shootout.

Schumacher, who crashed in practice Friday, was only 13th fastest and will start from 23rd after a 10-place grid penalty for an incident in the previous round in Sinqapore.

But Vettel, who stayed clear of a late qualifying crash by Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus, which held up several drivers, including Alonso and Hamilton, was in imperious form as he stepped up his title bid.

"We had almost the perfect qualifying," he told the post-qualifying press conference.

"The car felt fantastic and I couldn't have asked for any more."

Vettel won in Singapore after race leader Hamilton retired and with six round remaining has become a real threat to Alonso.

Murray shocked by Raonic in Japan Open semifinals

Milos Raonic savors his upset victory over Andy Murray at the Japan Open.
Defending champion Andy Murray shunned two match points as he was knocked out by Canada's Milos Raonic in the semifinals of the Japan Open in Tokyo Saturday.

Murray, who beat Raonic on his way to the U.S. Open title last month, also led 4-1 in the third and deciding set and missed the pair of winning opportunities in the 12th game.

Sixth seed Raonic forced a tiebreak, which he won 7-4, to advance to the final of the hard court tournament where he will play Kei Nishikori.

The Japanese star delighted his home fans with a superb display in the second semifinal to beat Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 6-2 6-2.

The 21-year-old Raonic, who has moved to 15th in the world, broke Murray in the very opening game of the match to set the tone.

Murray had predicted that after his straight sets defeat of Raonic in New York that their second clash would be "much tougher" and so it proved.

But the Scot hit back to win the second on a tiebreak and when he moved ahead with a single break in the third his fears looked to have been allayed.

But Raonic broke back before he came under pressure again at 5-6, double faulting twice to give Murray his chances.

But both went begging and he took full advantage in the tiebreak to claim the biggest win of his career against the World No.3 and Olympic champion.

In other ATP Tour action Saturday, Novak Djokovic thrashed Florian Mayer in straights sets to reach the China Open final in Beijing.

The Serbian World No.2 won 6-1 6-4 to set up a clash with Jo Wilfried Tsonga of France, who led 6-1 4-1 when his semifinal opponent Feliciano Lopez of Spain retired injured.

In the women's semifinals, Maria Sharapova beat home favorite Li Na in straight sets, while World No.1 Victoria Azarenka saw off Marion Bartoli of France 6-4 6-2.

Cole apologizes for outburst over Terry racism case

Ashley Cole (right) may incur an FA sanction after his outburst in response to a report which highlighted 'inconsistencies' in the evidence he gave in support of Chelsea team mate John Terry (left) following his racial comments towards Anton Ferdinand last yea
Chelsea and England defender Ashley Cole ensured the continuation of one of the most rancorous sagas in the history of the English game when labeling the country's Football Association (FA) a "bunch of twats" on Friday.

The 31-year-old took to Twitter to refute the findings of an FA disciplinary panel which cast "considerable doubt" over evidence he gave in defense of former England captain John Terry, who was found guilty last month of racially abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand.

Ferdinand is the brother of Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand, whose comments about former England colleague Cole and strained relations with onetime defensive partner Terry have contributed to what one leading football official has described as a "'mafia feud".

'Hahahahaa, well done #fa I lied did I, #BUNCHOFTWATS,' Cole tweeted, so courting a possible misconduct charge himself from the very organization he was criticizing.

Cole, who is set to join up with the England squad after the weekend for two forthcoming World Cup qualifiers, has since deleted the tweet that was re-tweeted over 19,000 times and apologized for his remarks.

"I had just finished training and saw the captions on the TV screens in the treatment rooms about what was said in the FA Commission ruling about me," a statement issued by the player declared.

"I was really upset and tweeted my feelings in the heat of the moment. I apologize unreservedly for my comment about the FA."

Cole was responding to the FA's publication on Friday of a 63-page report which questioned the truth of statements given by himself, Terry and Chelsea club secretary David Barnard about a Premier League game at QPR in October 2011 -- with the commission describing Terry's defense as "improbable, implausible and contrived."

Stripped of the England captaincy in February by the FA in relation to an incident which has since seen him retire from international football, Terry has until 18 October to decide whether to appeal his four-game suspension and US$350,000 fine.

During a game which Chelsea lost 1-0, following the dismissal of two players from the current European champions, Terry has admitted to calling Ferdinand a "f****** black c***" in the closing moments.

The defense for his comments was based on the claim he was repeating words Ferdinand had said to him, with the Chelsea captain saying he was asking his fellow defender if he believed he had been on the end of racial abuse.

"We are driven to conclude not just that it is 'highly unlikely' that Mr. Ferdinand accused Mr. Terry on the pitch of calling him a 'black c***', but that he did not," the FA commission wrote.

"A much more plausible and likely explanation is that Mr. Terry was angry; angry at Mr. Ferdinand's taunting and provocation of him, angry at the way the match had gone, and angry at the way in which it seemed likely to end.

"The much more likely explanation for what he said is that all of this provoked him into saying 'f***ing black c***' as an insult, which is consistent with the fact that insults preceded and followed those words.

"The Commission is entitled to use its collective experience of life and people to judge demeanor.

"We have watched the film footage many times. In the critical phase, during which he uses the words 'f***ing black c***', Mr. Terry can be seen to be smiling initially, before his facial expression changes to disdainful and contemptuous.

"At no point is his demeanor and facial expression that of someone who is imploring, injured, or even quizzical in the face of an unfounded allegation by Mr. Ferdinand that he (Mr. Terry) had just been racially abusive towards him (Mr. Ferdinand)."

Terry was cleared in a magistrates' court in July of racially abusing Ferdinand but the FA found him guilty on 27 September, using the "balance of probabilities" as its standard of proof as opposed to the "beyond reasonable doubt" ruling used in a criminal trial.

The organization stressed that it does not believe "Terry to be a racist", citing a large body of testimonial evidence -- "including statements from black footballers" -- to say that he is not, but that it did find the controversy-plagued 31-year-old guilty of making a racist insult.

The FA also stated that it had "considerable doubt" over Cole's claims that he had heard Ferdinand use the word "black" when insulting Terry after the pair clashed late on.

The initial evidence given by Cole in the days after the game was amended in November 2011 when Chelsea secretary Barnard asked the FA to add the word "black" to the left back's original statement.

Nearly one year on, the FA panel found Barnard's evidence to be "materially defective."

It went on: "The Commission [has] considerable doubt as to whether the request to amend paragraph 4 of Mr. Cole's statement, to include the word 'black', was based on Mr. Cole's own personal recollections, or as a result of discussions that he had had with Mr. Barnard."

The document also found fault with Cole's claims since it believes abusive comments made by Ferdinand himself towards Terry -- which the QPR defender says were in relation to a perceived marital affair by the Chelsea man with a former team mate's ex-girlfriend -- were of a sexual rather than racial nature.

Some observers have queried the leniency of Terry's ban, half that given to Liverpool's Luis Suarez after he repeatedly racially abused Manchester United's Patrice Evra last year, and the FA report states that the Chelsea captain's punishment took light of the fact that his "racist insult was issued only once".

Even should Terry decide against appealing his ban and fine, Cole's outburst will means that an ongoing stain on the English game --- namely, the continuing focus on racism in the self-proclaimed "best league in the world" --- looks set to continue for some time.

Murray and Djokovic reach semifinals in Beijing and Tokyo

Andy Murray strikes a forehand during his three set win over Stanislas Wawrinka in Tokyo.
Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic maintained their title charges in Tokyo and Beijing with quarterfinal victories by contrasting routes Friday.

Murray was extended to three sets in beating Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka for this 50th win on the ATP Tour this year and the 10th in a row.

Djokovic needed less than an hour to beat Austria's Juergen Melzer 6-1 6-2 at one of his favorite venues.

He won the China Open title in 2009 and 2010 but did not defend his crown last year.

The Serbian, beaten by Murray to lose his U.S. Open crown last month, converted all four of his break points and fired 12 aces in a near flawless display.

"The serve was great tonight. It's one of the best serving matches I have had in my career, so that's a positive sign. I will try to keep on going," he told the official ATP Tour website.

Djokovic will play Germany's Florian Mayer as he bids to reach his ninth final on tour this year.

Spain's Feliciano Lopez will play third seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France in the other semifinal Saturday.

Murray looked set to wrap up an easy win over Wawrinka, one of his victims as he won Olympic gold in London, when he took the first set with two breaks of service.

But Wawrinka hit back to force a decider before the Britain pulled away again with two more breaks to wrap up the match in two hours 50 minutes.

He will face Milos Raonic of Canada for a place in the final.

The Canadian, beaten by Murray in the fourth round at the U.S. Open, saved a match point before beating Janko Tipsarevic 6-7 6-2 7-6.

"I'll try to do what I did in New York. I got a lot of returns in play. Once I was in the point, I was able to dictate a lot of them so I'll try and do the same tomorrow," Murray said as he looked forward to their last four clash.

Home hopes were kept alive by eighth seed Kei Nishikori, who became the first Japanese player to reach the semifinals of their home open.

He upset second seed Tomas Berdych 7-5, 6-4 Friday and will now take on Marcos Baghdatis, who beat qualifier Dmitry Tursunov 6-2 6-4.

Red Bull's Webber sets the pace in Japan

Red Bull's Australian driver Mark Webber is currently fifth in the 2012 F1 world championship.
Mark Webber set the fastest time in practice ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix as Red Bull dominated the session.

The Australian's time of one minute and 32.493 seconds was enough to see off McLaren's Lewis Hamilton, who was second fastest.

Webber's teammate and double world champion Sebastian Vettel completed the top three on a satisfying day for the Austrian-owned marque.

"It was a nice change to get some good weather; it's been the first dry weekend for a while," Webber, who is currently fifth in the world championship 62 points behind leader Fernando Alonso, told F1's official website.

"It's a challenging venue in terms of balance here, but the car ran well and we tested both tyres. We have areas where we can improve, mostly with the balance, so we have some work to do."

For 2008 world champion Hamilton, it was the first time he had taken to the track since announcing he will join McLaren for Mercedes at the end of the season.

"I have the coolest job! Suzuka is such a phenomenal circuit!" said the 27-year-old Hamilton. "The first lap out of the pits felt great.

"Just driving through the first couple of corners and feeling the acceleration, it takes a few laps to get warmed up, but you keep getting faster and faster as you push the limits.

"I feel comfortable with our car -- it's the best that it's ever been around here -- and I think I could have matched Mark's fastest time with an optimal lap. It's going to be very close in qualifying tomorrow."

Ferrari's Alonso could only manage fifth but the Spaniard was relatively satisfied with his team's showing ahead of qualifying on Saturday.

"Generally a positive day, during which we managed to get through everything on the program," said Alonso.

"It's hard to say precisely where we are: what is certain is that many of our rivals seem to be competitive, but as usual, we must wait until tomorrow to get a clearer picture of the situation."

Mercedes driver Michael Schumacher, who confirmed on Thursday he will retire at the end of the season, had a less successful day, crashing out after losing control of his car at the Spoon curve, hitting a tyre barrier.

Udinese stun Liverpool at Anfield while Inter cruise in Azerbaijan

Udinese's Giovanni Pasquale celebrates his goal against Liverpool at Anfield that helped his club to a 3-2 win
A dramatic second half fightback from Italian side Udinese stunned English Premier League club Liverpool in the Europa League and inflicted their third straight defeat at Anfield.

Brendan Rodgers' side had started brightly, taking the lead through Jonjo Shelvey's first half header, but Udinese roared out of the blocks in the second half.

Veteran striker Antonio Di Natale equalized just after the interval and an own goal from Uruguayan defender Sebastián Coates handed Udinese a 2-1 lead on 69 minutes.

Giovanni Pasquale quickly made it 3-1 and though Luis Suarez pulled a goal back with a spectacular free kick Liverpool couldn't find a leveler.

It increased the pressure on Rodgers, with Liverpool languishing in 14th place in the Premier League with just one win from six games.

"I thought the team worked very well but we can't have to score three, four or five goals to win games. That is the area we have to work on. We concede goals too easily," Rodgers told ITV.

The other game in Group A saw Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o score twice, as Anzhi Makhachkala beat Young Boys, of Switzerland, 2-0 in Russia.

Fellow Premier League side Newcastle fared better than Liverpool, easing past French outfit Bordeaux who came into the game on the back of a 17-match unbeaten run.

Shola Ameobi put them in front with a tap in before an own goal from Henrique doubled their lead. Senegal striker Papiss Cisse made it 3-0 in the second half, and Newcastle now top Group D.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew told ESPN: "What pleased me most was that we played with verve and energy again, we looked more like ourselves from last year, and that is a good side trust me."

Club Brugge -- Newcastle's next opponents -- beat Portuguese side Maritimo 2-0 in Belgium.

The third English club in the Europa League, Tottenham, had to make do with a 1-1 draw in Greece with Panathinaikos in Group J as Jose Toche canceled out Michael Dawson's opener.

The group's other game saw Italian side Lazio edge past Slovenians NK Maribor thanks to an Ederson goal.

Inter Milan cruised to their second successive victory of the competition with a 3-1 win away at Neftchi of Azerbaijan thanks to goals from Phillippe Coutinho, Chukwuma Joel Obi and Marko Livaja.

In the other Group H game, Russian side Rubin Kazan beat Partizan Belgrade 2-0.

Holders Atletico Madrid edged past Czech team Viktoria Plzen but had to rely on an injury time goal from Cristian Rodriguez in their Group B clash while in the other game Salim Cisse's goal handed Académica de Coimbra a win over Hapoel Tel-Aviv.

Two goals from Baroni Cristian helped Turkish outfit Fenerbahce win 4-2 at Borussia Monchengladbach in Group C. A brace from Loic Remy heped French club Marseille to a 5-1 win over Cypriots AEL.

In Group E Norwegian side Molde beat Stuttgart, of Germany, 2-0 while in Romania Steaua Bucharest defeated FC Copenhagen of Denmark 1-0.

Ukrainians Dnipro recorded a 3-2 victory at AIK Athens in Greece. The other Group F clash saw PSV Eindhoven thrash Italian side Napoli 3-0 in Holland.

In Group G, Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon were humbled in Hungary, losing 3-0 to minnows Videoton FC Fehervar.

FC Basel battled back from 2-0 down at home to Belgium's Racing Genk -- Marco Streller's double rescuing a point in Switzerland.

There were goals galore in Group I as French outfit Lyon beat Hapoel Kiryat Shmona 4-3 in Israel, Gueida Fofana netting twice, while Sparta Prague defeated Spain's Atheltic Bilbao 3-1 in the Czech Republic.

In Group K, Ukrainians Metalist Kharkiv beat Rapid Vienna of Austria 2-0, and Bayer Leverkusen beat Rosenborg 1-0 in Norway thanks to a goal from Stefan Kiessling.

In Group L Hannover beat Levante 2-1 despite having a man less than the Spanish side for more than 80 minutes.

Two goals from Nikola Djurdjic put Swedish side Helsingborg into the lead against Twente, but the Dutch outfit hit back to claim a 2-2 draw.

Schumacher motivated despite Hamilton deal

German Michael Schumacher won seven Formula One world championships between 1994 and 2004
Seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher insists he is still motivated to race in Formula One despite last week's announcement that he will be replaced at Mercedes by Lewis Hamilton.

The German has been linked with a switch to the Sauber team after it was confirmed Mexican Sergio Perez would be leaving the Swiss-based marque to replace 2008 world champion Hamilton at McLaren..

"My motivation is completely intact after the news last week," the 43-year-old told the sport's official website ahead of this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix.

"Especially because Suzuka is one of the season's highlights for me. I enjoy the circuit -- it has sections that challenge you as a driver like almost nowhere else."

Since coming out of retirement in 2010, the former Ferrari driver has struggled to recapture his best form.

He won five consecutive titles with the Italian team between 2000 and 2004, but he has registered just one podium finish since returning to the sport.

On Sunday, the most-decorated driver in F1 history will have his work cut out to finish in the points as Schumacher must serve a 10-place grid penalty at Suzuka for his part in a collision which forced both he and Toro Rosso's Jean-Eric Vergne out of the Singapore Grand Prix.

"Logically, it would also be nice to achieve a sporting highlight this weekend," continued Schumacher. "Although my chances are of course very limited because of my grid penalty. But I've always approached these things as a challenge."

Schumacher is currently 12th in the drivers' standings, 151 points behind championship leader Fernando Alonso of Ferrari, with six races of the season remaining.

BATE Borisov secure famous victory over Bayern Munich in Champions League

Bate Borisov players celebrate on their way to a 3-1 win over Bayern Munich in their Champions League group match.
BATE Borisov stunned German giants Bayern Munich 3-1 Tuesday to continue their superb start to the Champions League group stages.

The Belarusians won their opener against Lille and followed that up with a famous victory in their own stadium in Minsk.

It was the first defeat after nine straight wins in all competitions for German league leaders Bayern and they were always on the back foot once Aleksandr Pavlov put the home side ahead after 23 minutes.

Vitali Rodionov doubled the lead with 12 minutes remaining before Franck Ribery first struck the post then grabbed a 90th minute lifeline for the visitors.

Brazilian Renan Bressan sealed a famous victory for BATE with a clinching third on the counter attack in the fifth minute of injury time.

"This is a sensational result for us, we will celebrate a bit but we need to keep working hard," BATE's ex-Arsenal star Aleksandr Hleb told AFP.

"Bayern are still favorites in our group, we are taking it one match at a time.

In the other match in Group F, Valencia condemned Lille to their second straight defeat with a 2-0 win at the Mestella in Spain.

Goals from Jonas in either half clinched the vital win for Valencia.

An upset also looked possible when Manchester United trailed to minnows CFR Cluj in Romania through an early strike from Pantelis Kapetanos.

But a pair of goals from Robin van Persie, both time assisted by Wayne Rooney, secured victory for Alex Ferguson's men.

They top Group H with two wins, while FC Braga beat Galatasaray 2-0 in the other match played.

Reigning champions Chelsea secured their first victory in Group E, beating Danish minnows FC Nordsjaelland 4-0 in Copenhagen.

A Juan Mata goal just before half time was all that separated the two sides for much of the encounter and Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech made a superb save to touch a Joshua John shot on to the post after the break.

But David Luiz rifled home a second from a free kick, Mata scored his second, and Ramires with the fourth put a gloss on the scoreline.

Juventus, who held Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in their opener, had to come from behind to salvage a point against Shakhtar Donetsk in a 1-1 draw in Turin.

Willian fed fellow Brazilian Alex Texeira to fire the Ukrainians ahead after 23 minutes.

But Serie A champions Juventus preserved their 45-match unbeaten run when Leonardo Bonucci scored from Andrea Pirlo's corner just a minute later.

Barcelona won the heavyweight clash in Benfica 2-0 to maintain their 100 per cent start to Group G.

Alexis Sanchez put Barca ahead after only six minutes and midfielder Cesc Fabregas sealed three points in the Stadium of Light after the break.

Their night was partially spoilt with two minutes to go when Sergio Busquets was shown red after a clash with Maxi Pereira.

Scottish champions Celtic are giving chase on four points after a 3-2 away win over Spartak Moscow.

Celtic went into the match in the Russian capital with a record of 11 straight losses on the road in the Champions League and 21 games without a win away from home.

But an early goal from Gary Hooper gave Neil Lennon's men great encouragement.

Spartak hit back to lead 2-1 after an Emmanuel Emmenike double, but home defender Juan Insaurralde was sent off just after the hour mark for pulling back Hooper.

Celtic leveled when substitute James Forrest's shot found its way home via a rebound from defender Dmitri Kombarov.

Giorgos Samaras headed a dramatic and deserved late winner for Celtic.

Olazabal steps down as Europe's Ryder Cup captain

European captain Jose Maria Olazabal won the Ryder Cup three times as a player.
Jose Maria Olazabal has confirmed he will not continue in his role as Europe's Ryder Cup captain after the weekend's memorable win over the United States.

Europe retained the prestigious trophy by beating Davis Love III's team 14½ - 13½ at the Medinah Country Club, despite having trailed by four points heading into Sunday's singles matches.

But after helping Europe keep hold of the cup it won in 2010, Spain's Olazabal believes it is time to for another captain to take charge.

"First of all it is a lot of work," the two-time major winner told a news conference.

"It takes a lot from you you during the stretch of time from when you are named captain to the actual playing of the Ryder Cup.

"On top of that there are a lot of players who should have the opportunity to be in my spot ... clearly I won't do it again."

Olazabal would be happy to offer advice to his successor, although he says he will also not force himself on the next incumbent -- with Irishman Paul McGinley, a vice-captain in Illinois, the early favorite to replace the Spaniard.

"The captain has to decide what he wants," added the 46-year-old Olazabal. "If he wants to reach out to me, fine. But I'm not going to be in there, I'm going to be just on the side.

"I think this is a one-time chance. I had my chance and now I will step back, try to concentrate on my game and leave the next captain to do his job."

Olazabal also revealed how Europe's triumph -- dubbed the "Miracle of Medinah" -- has prompted congratulatory messages from Spanish royalty and the nation's top sports stars.

"The King of Spain called me a few minutes ago and was pretty much over the moon, like me," he said. "There have been messages from sports guys like [tennis player Rafael] Nadal and lots from friends and family."

Europe's challenge could have been derailed before it got off the ground when world No. 1 Rory McIlroy arrived at the golf course late on Sunday. The two-time major winner was confused over which time zone he was in.

Luckily for Olazabal, the Northern Irishman was driven to Medinah by a state trooper and was able to win his match with U.S. rookie Keegan Bradley.

"Obviously, we were a little concerned but we knew at 11:05 he was going to make it to the tee with no problems. That's why I was not all that tense," said Olazabal.

"Luckily enough a police car was there and he made it on time. It was no surprise at all he managed to win his point."

Olazabal was also asked to select his highlight of the weekend, opting for Ian Poulter's fifth consecutive birdie on the 18th hole of Saturday's fourballs to give Europe a vital point.

"It's hard to just pick one but I think the putt Poulter made on 18 on Saturday afternoon was huge. We all knew how important that was. If that didn't happen I don't think we'd have had a chance to win. It was crucial."
